The round began with a bang.
A series of them, actually. Thanks to the military jets that shot straight up into the sky directly over hole number one at the Safeway Classic. First we heard them, then we saw them and then they were gone; hurtling into the heavens at a seemingly impossible angle of ascent that appeared to be nearly perpendicular to the earth. It was a breathtaking sight to behold and there was some speculation amongst the fans that it was put on specifically for the benefit of the lady golfers although that was quickly dispelled in favor of the "we're not more than half a mile away from the Oregon Air National Guard and Portland International Airport so this is business as usual" theory.
Still, it was a great way to start the tournament.
