Annika Supports International Girls Junior Event

Annika Sorenstam and the American Junior Golf Association are combining efforts to create The ANNIKA Invitational, an invitation-only event featuring the top 60 girls from around the world, the AJGA announced Tuesday. Held at Ginn Reunion Resort on the Independence (Watson) Course, the event will take place Jan. 16-19, 2009. Sorenstam will be involved in the tournament in every way, including conducting clinics and educational activities for the participants.

Rolex Watch USA, a longtime supporter of both Sorenstam and the AJGA, the LPGA and Callaway will be tournament partners. 

The event will be hosted by The ANNIKA Foundation. The ANNIKA Foundation is dedicated to providing inspirational experiences, and educational and financial resources that will help children in need to realize their full potential. The Foundation will create and partner with programs that teach the importance of living a healthy active lifestyle through nutrition and physical fitness and offer experiences and opportunities that enable aspiring junior golfers to pursue their dreams

Proceeds from the event will be used to endow an Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant in Sorenstam’s name. The ACE Grant program was created by the AJGA in 2003 to ensure competitive golf opportunities were available to all young golfers regardless of their financial resources. Since the program’s inception, the AJGA has awarded 255 ACE Grants to 170 juniors totaling nearly $937,000.

The tournament field will be selected using the Polo Golf Rankings along with select international invitees to be determined.

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to be hosting this AJGA event,” said Sorenstam.  “My intention has always been to help give back to the game of golf that has given me so much.  By providing these juniors a chance to learn about competition, health and nutrition and the camaraderie in golf, we are truly seeing the mission of the ANNIKA Foundation come to life.”

Back to "work"

My three weeks off from competition is over. Where did the time go? It flew by as we enjoyed some time at home. I had a chance to recharge my batteries, which was much needed after seven straight weeks on the road in six different countries. During my time off I practiced, had a few sponsor outings, business meetings and some personal time. My best friend Maria came to visit from Sweden, which was great. We had a blast together, especially when we went "bridesmaid" shopping with my sister, Lotta and our friend Selena. Eventually, we found some beautiful dresses, which was exciting. We also had a chance to play some tennis. Please tune into the video gallery on my blog. As you can see, I am a little rusty, but with some practice I am optimistic that I will rediscover the game I had in my youth.  However, the game that I am relying on now is my golf game. The LPGA is in beautiful Half Moon Bay in Northern California this week. It's a select field of the top 20 players in the world. I am excited to be here and ready to get back to the winner's circle.

A few weeks off

Greetings from Orlando. I am now back home after a few busy days on the road. I just finished my second sponsor outing and I look forward to a few days of rest. Last time I checked in with you, I had my fingers crossed for hurricane Ike, now I am glued to the TV watching the stock market. Right now, we are experiencing some crazy and scary times. I have always had an interest in business and finances, so I find it very interesting to follow this frenzy. I am trying to figure out some logic to this drastic sell off, but I am afraid at this time the bubble has cracked and we are reacting to a needed correction. I am trying to think long term and stay calm and patient - just like golf.

Nykredit Masters - Day 3

Second round

Good afternoon everyone. It is  Saturday and I am back at the hotel after a solid day at the office. I hit the ball well today, so I had many birdie and eagle chances. I actually made a 35 footer for eagle on my third hole. A few holes later I tapped in for birdie after my tee shot on the par 3 rolled over the hole. It was so close to being a hole in one! I finished the day with two birdies to put me at seven under par for the tournament. As of now, I am tied for second place. The leader is at an amazing 13 under, so I will need a great round tomorrow. Maybe a 59...
Just before dinner, we have a meeting with IMG to discuss the Scandinavian TPC hosted by me. We are already in the planning and strategy phases for next year as our goal is to make my event a premier stop again on the LET.
