As you know, the LPGA is in China this week. I have been to this part of the world several times, but this is my first time to Hainan Island, also known as the Hawaii of China. This is an interesting country in many ways.
Here are some cool facts that might surprise you.
It is the fourth largest Country in the World. Shanghai and Beijing are two of the largest and most populous cities in the world.
At least 14 countries and 4 seas border China.
It is sub arctic in the North and Tropical in the South.
The population of China is estimated at 1,313,970 000.
The Chinese Government has adopted a “one child” policy in an effort to curb the high numbers. Unfortunately this also makes China one of the fastest aging countries.
Mandarin Chinese is the official language.
The Chinese language has over 20,000 characters.
The average Chinese only learns about 5,000 of these in his lifetime.
The Great Wall of China is over 1500 miles in length. One of the seven world's wonders.
Acupuncture originated over 5000 years ago from China. Paper, Compass, Explosive Powder and Printing qualify as the “ Four Great Inventions of China ”.
China invented ice cream in 2000 BC.
In Hong Kong , cars are driven to the left side of the road, following the British way, but the rest of China drives on the right side.
People have been drinking tea in China for over 1800 years.
The list goes on, but it's time for dinner. I have feeling it will be Chinese food...I hope my fortune cookie provides me some wisdom for the week!

The fact that one drives on left side of street in Hong Kong, and the other side of the street everywhere else, would leave me with one choice to assure the safety of bystander,
1. stick with the rickshaw when in HK!!! Couldn't hurt too bad if my driver ran into someone with one of those right?

Annika,
Hope you are enjoying your time in China. I lived in Hong Kong for 10 years and played a little golf while there. Unfortunately because space is at such a premium, there are limited public courses and the private ones are prohibitive. But China is building more and more courses (since there is more land there) and hopefully the government will encourage more people to take up the game. Oh, and the reason people drive on the left side of the road in Hong Kong is because it was formerly under British rule so that's how the Brits set it up.
